Governor Charlie Crist of Florida has declared March 13 'K9 Veterans Day'. Florida is the first state to do so. Last year, due to the efforts of Joe White, Mayor Payton of Jacksonville Beach, FL declared the same. There is a country wide effort to make this a federal proclamation and Governor Crist of Florida just 'set the bar'!

Per my article 'Military dogs are heroes too' the K9 Corps was officially started by the government during WWII, specifically on March 13, 1942, hence the reason for getting March 13th declared as K9 Veterans Day.

White is calling for public support to name a Veterans Day for all 'War Dogs' and he needs our help. Contact your Senators and Representatives, your local government, businesses, VFW organizations, heck, why not write President Obama himself and the First Lady, Michelle Obama (she comes from a military family and has made major efforts in her role as First Lady to honor the military personnel who have served bravely and with honor). Ask for their help in bringing this issue to the attention of law makers and citizens.

Dogs are the most altruistic creatures alive; they thrive on love and purpose to their humans. Gosh, they work only for food! It's time to give these war heroes the recognition and respect they deserve. And let's not forget the many dogs working with police departments, the Coast Guard, Search and Rescue and Therapy dogs. They are heroes, too!
